Recovery Conditions

The tape was recovered from a deteriorating magnetic reel labeled in faded marker:

DO NOT ARCHIVE UNTIL EXPLAINED — hand-lettered, reel partially demagnetized, author of label not recorded

The voice on the recording sounds exhausted but calm.

Transcript

“People keep asking what it means.
We’ve explained repeatedly that meaning was never one of the mission objectives.
The objective was observation.
Meaning appears to be something the phenomenon manufactures on its own.
Sometimes in excessive quantities.”

[ 47 SECONDS OF MEANINGFUL STATIC ]

Final sentence, barely audible:

“If you require a purpose, please construct one from locally available materials.”

Key Evidence

Archival Disposition

Per its label, this object cannot be filed until it is explained. It has not been explained.

47×

The tape has been archived 47 times. It always reappears.

Each attempt to remove it from circulation is logged as successful. On the following review, the tape is present. The logs are not amended, because the logs are not wrong: it was archived. It simply did not stay archived.

Recovered Evidence & Source Documents

This placard reproduces the transcript. The source recording itself sits deeper in the archive, where it continues to reappear.

LAYER 3 • AUDIO-LOG NV2-47 Recovered Transmission #47 — the source recording of the voice quoted above. Tired. Calm. Forty-seven seconds. LAYER 4 • DOC#F-MGS-00 Myth Generation System — Operating Manual — the procedure by which the phenomenon manufactures meaning “in excessive quantities.” LAYER 1 • MYTH #06 The Observer Contamination Event — where the same closing line is recovered again, decades later, in a different voice.

Meaning was never one of the mission objectives.

The phenomenon manufactures it anyway. Sometimes in excessive quantities.

“If you require a purpose, please construct one from locally available materials.”

NOTICE TO ARCHIVAL STAFF:
Do not attempt to satisfy the label by explaining the tape. The previous forty-seven explanations were accepted, filed, and subsequently found to have produced a forty-eighth copy of the tape.
