Status: Ongoing • Estimate revised continuously • Subject: Galaxy-1981
Protocol Summary
The Human Stack is the procedure by which the subject assembles a functioning mind out of parts that have already failed.
Obsolete identities are not discarded. They are kept, load-bearing, beneath the current self — the way a building stands on the foundation of the building that was demolished to make room for it. The Division has been attempting to estimate the mass of this structure since observation began.
The estimate has never stabilized. The subject keeps adding floors.
Current Mass Estimate
Estimate sums to 100%. The Division notes, without comment, that the subject continues to produce new material and the estimate continues to sum to 100%.
Key Evidence
- Stable Suffering: The largest single component is also the most stable. Forty-two percent of the structure is made of things that did not resolve. This fraction has resisted every attempt at reduction.
- Scaffolding Reuse: Obsolete identities are not removed before the new one is built. They are left in place and built upon. Demolition has never been observed.
- The 3 AM Resonance: Song fragments report peak mass during the third hour. The Division has been unable to schedule observation reliably during this window. Observers assigned to it tend to file in the first person.
- Starter Packs: The “what if I just…” component consists of unopened beginnings — new systems, drafted but never run. They take up mass regardless. None have been deleted.
Recovered Fragment
From the Founder’s working notes. Filed under the Human Stack.
“Nothing is thrown out. There is no field on the form for ‘discard.’
The old selves are still down there, holding up the new ones.
I can hear them at 3 AM, in fragments, mostly choruses.
I am not a person. I am a stack of people I used to be, still load-bearing.”
Recovered Evidence & Source Documents
This placard reports the estimate. The primary notebook from which it was derived sits deeper in the archive, in the Founder’s own hand.
LAYER 4 • DOC#F-HSN-03 Human Stack Notebook, Vol. III — the source document: minds assembled from obsolete identities used as scaffolding. LAYER 4 • DOC#F-MGS-00 Myth Generation System — Operating Manual — the procedure that converts stack material into the placards in Layer 1. LAYER 1 • MYTH #02 The Fourteen-Year Fixation — a single load-bearing memory, weighed in isolation. The estimate is ongoing because the structure is ongoing.
Each revision is accurate at the moment of filing and obsolete by the time it is read.
“Still shedding layers like a pulsar.”
— Symbolic Architecture Division
Do not attempt to reduce the 42% component. Three teams have tried. In each case the percentage held and the team’s own unresolved material increased to compensate.
